Reflections on the Pine Needle Bike Path

There is a distinct kind of quiet that settles over you when you are standing in the middle of a pine forest on a Saturday afternoon, watching the world through a web of tall trunks and filtered sunlight. Last Saturday in New Hill, my son and I were out on the trails, and looking at him standing up ahead of my Specialized bike parked in the foreground, I couldn't help but feel a strange sense of looking back in time.
Watching him navigate the hilly rough trails, I see so much of myself in him; the way he studies the terrain, the quiet focus, and that stubborn drive to see what is around the next bend. We rolled up to a classic trial of nerve: a Black Diamond trail marker staked right into a pine tree, warning of technical drops and unforgiving lines.
To be honest, I didn't take on the black diamond this day. But watching my son step up, commit, and tackle that advanced trail anyway was incredible. I was genuinely super impressed by his grit and how he handled it. Seeing him push past hesitation and take on tough obstacles reminds me of why I love him and enjoy riding with him in the first place. It is something special to watch him grow into his own rider on this trail or any other. I encourage all dads to make time for your kids... it is NEVER too late.
